75% of dead aged over 60 as COVID-19 cases touch 15,000-mark in India


The number of positive COVID-19 cases crossed the 15,000-mark on Sunday (April 19) while the death toll jumped to 507. A total of 15,707 cases have been reported, of which 12,969 are active cases, while 2,230 are cured, the Union Health Ministry said.

There are 22 new districts in 12 states that have not reported any fresh cases during the last 14 days, Joint Secretary, Health, Lav Agarwal said on Saturday during a press briefing.

  • According to health ministry analysis, 75.3% of those who died were over 60 years old, 42.2% who died were over 75 years, 33.1% in 60-75 age group, 10.3% in 45-60 age group, and 14.4% below 45 years.
  • 8% of the COVID-19 cases in the country have been traced to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi in March.

Tablighi cases (State-wise break-up)

  1. Tamil Nadu – 84%
  2. Telangana – 79%
  3. New Delhi – 63%
  4. Andhra Pradesh – 61%
  5. Uttar Pradesh – 59%
  6. Assam – 91%
  7. Andaman and Nicobar – 83%

  • Of the total deaths, 83 per cent patients had co-morbidities like diabetes, hypertension and heart disease.
  • Patna in Bihar, Nadia in West Bengal, and Panipat in Haryana, districts which had not reported any new cases for the past 14 days, have reported fresh cases in the past 24 hours.
  • Maharashtra continues to remain the worst-hit state in the country with 3,600 cases. The number of cases in Mumbai’s Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum, rose to 117 on Saturday.

According to the ministry, India may touch its peak in terms of number of coronavirus cases in the first week of May, after which the number will decline.
