Chennai's Kanathur police have arrested YouTuber and tech executive Jason Samuel in connection with the death of 27-year-old financial influencer V Harish, who died by suicide. The latter's father had filed a complaint, alleging sustained cyberbullying, defamatory content, and threats that caused severe mental distress to his son.

Harish, who ran the popular social media brand “Finance With Harish” on Instagram and YouTube, was found hanging at his rented villa near Muttukadu on Chennai’s East Coast Road (ECR) on October 20. He had built a following of around 1.3 million users over five years, offering personal finance content. Police recovered the body and shifted it to Chengalpattu Government Hospital for post-mortem.

Jason Samuel’s video last week

Samuel, CEO of venture studio Zemuria Inc. and a YouTuber known for calling out other content creators, had posted a lengthy video last week on financial influencers, or finfluencers. He accused Harish of offering investment advice without being a SEBI-registered Investment Adviser (RIA), of misrepresenting his Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) credentials, and of misleading the public with what he termed a fake licence.

Harish’s main Instagram account was subsequently disabled by Meta following mass reports. He launched a new channel, which was also taken down. Reports indicate earlier disruptions to his online presence as well, including accounts being blocked in September.

Harish’s allegations about Samuel

Before his death, Harish recorded a video that was later widely shared. In it, he claimed Samuel had threatened that he would get all of Harish's social media accounts blocked, and would further prevent him from creating new ones. He described five years of hard work as having been "stolen" and alleged mental harassment, pressure regarding income-tax issues, and efforts to extract money.

Family accounts and media reports of the video and complaint further claim that Samuel demanded around Rs 3 crore to "settle" the matter, threatened the family, including statements directed at Harish’s parents in Puducherry, and name-dropped the Puducherry Chief Minister and an MLA.

Harish’s father, J Vinayagam, filed a complaint at Kanathur police station. He alleged that Samuel’s defamatory videos and posts, followed by online harassment and cyberbullying, drove his son to take his life. Police initially registered a case of unnatural/suspicious death and later added the charge of abetment to suicide under Section 108 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Investigators are examining digital evidence, the videos, social media activity, and the circumstances of the account suspensions.

Samuel was picked up from Puducherry, brought to Kanathur police station and interrogated by Pallikaranai Deputy Commissioner Ragupathy.

Samuel denies allegations

Samuel has publicly denied the allegations of cyberbullying, personal threats, or extortion. In social media statements, he expressed shock and grief over Harish's death, stating that he had only highlighted what he believed were regulatory violations.

The case has sparked intense discussion in Tamil Nadu’s content-creator community about the line between public criticism of credentials and online harassment. The police are still investigating.

‘Vital evidence’

Cybercrime lawyer N Karthikeyan, speaking to The Federal, said Harish's recorded video constitutes a “dying declaration” and is vital evidence that is strong enough to justify Samuel's arrest.

“This video is vital evidence. The possibility of diverting the case as a family problem does not exist,” Karthikeyan said. He added that once such a statement is on record, the investigation is unlikely to be redirected away from the allegations of cyberbullying and mental harassment.

“In India, anyone can speak on any subject on the internet. In China, there is a requirement that a person must have studied and obtained a degree in that subject. This situation in India needs to change,” he observed.

The lawyer argued that instead of personally targeting Harish through a YouTube video, Samuel could have filed a formal complaint with SEBI about influencers operating without proper registration and allowed the regulator to investigate. He could also have approached a court.

“By ignoring all these options and himself recording a video that spreads defamation against Harish, Samuel has created legal complications,” Karthikeyan said.
