TVK-Rangasamy bonhomie shakes Puducherry NDA equations
Aadhav Arjuna and Rangasamy sharing the stage has sparked speculation over TVK’s growing role in Puducherry politics. Is the BJP under pressure?
A sports event in Puducherry has triggered intense political chatter after Chief Minister N Rangasamy shared the stage with Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) leader Aadhav Arjuna during the inauguration of the 76th National Junior Basketball Championship on May 22.
What appeared to be a routine public event quickly turned into a major political talking point after both leaders exchanged warm remarks, fuelling speculation about shifting political equations in Puducherry and possible pressure on the BJP within the ruling alliance.
Aadhav Arjuna, who is emerging as one of the prominent faces of the TVK led by actor-politician Vijay, declared that TVK would always stand with Puducherry. Drawing comparisons between Vijay and Rangasamy, he said both leaders continued to move forward despite criticism.
“They move ahead ignoring criticism, and those who attacked them have disappeared from politics,” Aadhav Arjuna said, while also promising TVK’s support for Puducherry’s development.
Public camaraderie
Rangasamy responded warmly and expressed hope that Vijay would play a major role in Puducherry’s future growth. He also referred to the “harmonious” relationship between Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, and voiced confidence that Tamil Nadu would allocate land required for the expansion of Puducherry airport.
The public camaraderie between the two leaders has gained political significance because of the fragile balance within the newly-formed Puducherry government.

In the recently-concluded Assembly elections, Rangasamy’s All India NR Congress secured 12 seats, while its NDA ally BJP won four. TVK won two seats and its ally secured one more, making the party the third-largest political force in Puducherry with close to 16 per cent vote share.
Adding to the arithmetic are two independent MLAs believed to be sympathetic to Rangasamy. With outside support from TVK, observers say the Chief Minister could potentially command the backing of 15 legislators.
Cabinet deadlock
The political developments come amid a prolonged deadlock over Cabinet formation in Puducherry.
So far, Rangasamy has taken the oath along with only two ministers — Malladi Krishna Rao from the NR Congress and BJP leader K Namassivayam. The Speaker’s post and three Cabinet berths remain vacant.
Sources indicate that the BJP is seeking the Speaker’s position along with key portfolios such as Home and Adi Dravidar Welfare — departments it held in the previous NDA government.

The BJP is also believed to be pushing for representation for ally Jose Charles Martin, founder of the Latchiya Jananayaga Katchi (LJK), either as Speaker or Cabinet minister.
Political analysts believe Rangasamy’s visible outreach to TVK is a strategic signal to the BJP that he has alternative political options if negotiations within the NDA become difficult.
Congress watching situation
The Congress is also closely watching the evolving situation. Former chief minister V Narayanasamy has reportedly convened a steering committee meeting to discuss the party’s future strategy in Puducherry, especially in the context of the Congress-TVK understanding in Tamil Nadu.
There is also speculation that the Puducherry Congress unit could explore a broader opposition front involving TVK ahead of future elections.

Another factor drawing attention is TVK general secretary Anand, who is said to share a cordial personal relationship with Rangasamy. Political observers believe TVK could gradually carve out a distinct political space for itself in Puducherry, separate from its positioning in Tamil Nadu.
Balancing act
Despite the growing political warmth between Rangasamy and TVK, a complete break from the BJP-led NDA appears unlikely for now.
As a Union Territory, Puducherry depends heavily on the Union government for funding, approvals, and development clearances. Political observers say Rangasamy cannot afford to completely distance himself from the Centre.
However, the developments at the basketball championship event have clearly altered perceptions around the Chief Minister’s political standing.

For the BJP, the message appears unmistakable — Rangasamy is no longer negotiating from a position of weakness, and Puducherry’s political equations may be entering a new phase altogether.
