Karnataka vs Tamil Nadu: A Metro 'race' over connecting Hosur

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are locked in a 'Metro War' of sorts over connecting Bengaluru and Hosur. The Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning to extend its Yellow Line from Bommasandra to Attibele (Karnataka border), while Tamil Nadu is pushing a cross-border route directly from Hosur to Bommasandra (in Karnataka).

According to reports, BMRCL has prepared a feasibility report to extend the Namma Metro’s Yellow Line from the existing Bommasandra station to Attibele, the town where the border check post is located before entering Tamil Nadu.

“The feasibility study was submitted to the state government, which has given us the go-ahead to prepare the detailed project report (DPR). Tenders to prepare the DPR will be invited soon,” Deccan Herald newspaper has reported.

The line has been proposed along the right side of Hosur Road (NH 44) to serve fast-developing localities, with stations connected to nearby areas through foot overbridges and subways, wherever required, the report added.

The proposed extension of the Yellow Line will be of 10.5 kilometres, including nine stations – Narayana Institute of Cardiac Sciences, Chandapura Circle, Hale Chandapura, Thirumagondanahalli, Balagaranahalli, Attibele Industrial Area, Yadavanahalli, Attibele and Attibele Terminal.

Interestingly, the news comes 10 days after Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Marie Wilson announced in the state Budget that the government was pursuing a Metro rail link between Hosur in Krishnagiri district and Bommasandra in Bengaluru. The proposed corridor is 23 km long, with 12 stations: 11 km in Tamil Nadu and 12 km in Karnataka. However, earlier this year, Karnataka had rejected Tamil Nadu’s proposal for an interstate Metro connecting Hosur and Bengaluru.

DK Shivakumar's idea?

Last August, in the Karnataka Assembly, then Deputy Chief Minister and Bengaluru Development Minister DK Shivakumar said the government will consider extending the Yellow Line till Attibele. He had said that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) was being prepared by Hyderabad’s RV Associates. Shivakumar is now the Chief Minister.

The existing Namma Metro Yellow Line has 16 stations and runs from Rashtreeya Vidyalaya to Bommasandra. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated it on August 10, 2025.
