Bengaluru-Hosur Metro extension: What commuters, techies say

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added fresh political pressure to the project. However, final approval still depends on several factors.

The proposal to extend Bengaluru’s Namma Metro Yellow Line to Hosur in neighbouring Tamil Nadu has received strong public support.

In a ground report by The Federal Karnataka, IT professionals, students and local auto drivers stressed the need for the project, with many saying the Metro extension could significantly ease traffic congestion for ordinary commuters.

Relief from traffic congestion and convenience for employees

The Metro extension would directly benefit thousands of employees working along the IT corridor.

According to Matthew, an employee of IT major Infosys, the project is particularly important for people living in Chandapura and beyond. Commuters currently struggle with severe traffic congestion on this stretch of the highway. Once Metro services extend to Hosur, employees will have access to a faster, more convenient mode of transport.

Relief for students and daily commuters

The project would greatly benefit students travelling from Hosur and surrounding areas to Electronic City and other parts of Bengaluru for their education.

According to Chinmay, a student, Metro services would significantly reduce daily travel time for those commuting to colleges and workplaces. Moreover, reduced dependence on public buses and private vehicles would naturally ease the pressure on roads.

Boost for local businesses and improved interstate connectivity

The Metro project would benefit not only employees and students but also local traders and auto drivers.

According to Prabhu, an auto driver, heavy traffic congestion along the Attibele route means that even short distances take a considerable amount of time to cover. The Metro would make it easier for people from rural areas to reach Bengaluru.

Another auto driver, Prakash, believes the project must be implemented. It would improve interstate commercial and transport connectivity between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, making travel easier and providing greater convenience for traders.

A clear public demand

The general public views extending the Metro as the only lasting solution to the traffic congestion plaguing the highways around Bommasandra, Chandapura and Attibele. People have urged the government to overcome technical hurdles and implement the project without delay to prevent time loss, fuel wastage and economic losses caused by traffic congestion.

What is the objective of the project?

The primary objective of extending Namma Metro from Bommasandra in Bengaluru to Hosur in Tamil Nadu is to make travel between the two states easier. A key goal is to provide public transport connectivity to thousands of employees working in Bengaluru’s Electronic City and Bommasandra, as well as in Hosur’s industrial belt.

The project is expected to reduce dependence on road transport for people travelling between Bengaluru and Hosur daily for work, business and education. It also aims to strengthen connectivity between the two industrial hubs and stimulate economic activity.

Efforts began in 2022

The proposal to extend the metro from Bommasandra to Hosur first gained traction in 2022. At the time, the Karnataka government reportedly allowed Tamil Nadu to conduct a feasibility study for the project. The proposed route was initially estimated to be around 20.5 km long. According to the initial proposal, 11.7 km would fall within Karnataka and 8.8 km within Tamil Nadu.

Proposal for a 23-km route with 12 stations

In August 2024, Chennai Metro Rail Corporation continued work on preparing a detailed feasibility report for an approximately 23-km extension connecting Bommasandra to Hosur via Attibele. The proposal envisages around 12 km of track in Karnataka and 11 km in Tamil Nadu, along with a total of 12 stations and a depot. The estimated project cost has been reported at around Rs 6,900 crore.

What are Karnataka’s objections?

In 2023, Karnataka’s IT and Biotechnology Minister Priyank Kharge expressed concerns that extending Metro connectivity to Hosur could affect the competitiveness of Karnataka’s industries and its investment prospects. He argued that lower land prices and a lower cost of living in Hosur could prompt small industries and start-ups based in Bengaluru’s Electronic City to relocate to Tamil Nadu. However, some representatives of industry associations in Karnataka did not share these concerns.

TN CM Vijay’s appeal to PM Modi

According to reports, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has identified issues related to power-system compatibility, route design and station operations near the state border. An alternative proposal to extend the Metro only up to Attibele has also been studied.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay’s appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi has added fresh political pressure to the project. However, final approval still depends on several factors.
