TMC MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar slams party again: Trouble for Mamata in LS too?
The veteran parliamentarian hits out at the party's 2026 poll debacle, as rival leaders claim over 20 TMC lawmakers are ready to defect at the Centre
Amid a serious turmoil in West Bengal, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) might face a new war front, this time in Parliament. Days after a few leaders from the opposition camps, such as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP), said that rebellion was brewing among the TMC’s MPs and soon there could be another split, senior parliamentarian Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar targeted her party in a social media post on Friday (June 5).
'Verdict against governance failure'
Kakoli, the 66-year-old four-term doctor-parliamentarian from Barasat, Bengal, said in her post that the TMC’s devastating loss in the 2026 Assembly elections was a “verdict against policy and failure of governance”.

The veteran MP also expressed her disappointment after the TMC top brass removed her from the post of the chief whip in the Lok Sabha, saying it was a reward for her four decades of loyalty. She also asked in her post, “Do you think an MP of 4 terms from a political family, having been with Mamata Banerjee, fighting autocracy for 4 decades thinks of self?”

During a recent protest in Kolkata, Mamata criticised an unnamed party leader, saying the person was not happy with own son not getting a ticket for the state polls and hence was making dissenting remarks. According to observers, the supremo’s words were directed at Kakoli, and the latter’s social media post was a response to that.
The MP also posted a remark by former US president Woodrow Wilson and excerpts penned by poet Charles Mackey to convey a message that those who work invariably have enemies. However, she did not mention any link between those posts and the current political situation in the TMC.
BJP, AJUP leaders predict TMC splitting at Centre
Last month, senior BJP leader Saumitra Khan claimed that around 20 TMC MPs were in contact with the BJP and could switch camp. The TMC then ruled his views out, calling them “bogus”.

This week, AJUP leader Humayun Kabir, a former member of the TMC who was expelled last year and formed his own party and contested this year’s election, told NDTV that more than 20 TMC MPs want Abhishek Banerjee, the party’s leader in the Lok Sabha, to be removed from the post. He said they have already spoken with Speaker Om Birla on the matter.
Anger against Abhishek Banerjee
Dissatisfaction over Abhishek has surfaced since the TMC’s poll debacle. In Bengal, 58 rebel MLAs refused to toe the party leadership’s line and, alleging forgery of signature to push the endorsement of senior leader Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Leader of Opposition, backed Ritabrata Banerjee in his place. It split the party, with only around 20 MLAs remaining loyal to Mamata.

The TMC has 29 MPs in the current Lok Sabha, making it the fourth-largest party in the Lower House, trailing the BJP, Congress and Samajwadi Party. Since the party has remained a vociferous critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his BJP, a fracture within the TMC’s parliamentary delegation could serve the opposition a body blow.
All eyes will be on INDIA meeting
Mamata recently dissolved all bodies of the TMC with immediate effect, eyeing to protect whatever is left of her own party. All eyes will also be on the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance meeting in New Delhi, scheduled for June 8, where Mamata and Abhishek are expected to be present. With the monsoon session of Parliament not too far away, and the government set to take up the delimitation mission, which failed to get the required mandate in April.
According to an India Today report, the National Democratic Alliance government has already reached out to opposition outfits such as the TMC and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, and many of the TMC MPs responded to the approach positively.
Such developments will keep Mamata and her allies in the TMC apprehensive.
