TMC crisis deepens as state party chief Chandrima Bhattacharya resigns from all posts

TMC leader Chandrima Bhattacharya resigns from all party posts amid internal unrest following the Assembly election defeat and the Kolkata headquarters dispute

The crisis for Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee, which began after the party’s ouster from power in the Assembly election, deepened on Saturday (July 4) with one of her loyalists and TMC state president Chandrima Bhattacharya resigning from all party positions.

Her resignation comes barely a month after she was entrusted with the crucial organisational responsibility in the aftermath of the party's assembly election debacle.

Earlier on Friday (July 4), the Ritabrata faction of the TMC allegedly took over the party’s state headquarters in Kolkata.

Resigns from all posts

Bhattacharya, in her resignation letter to the TMC chairperson, also withdrew herself as the party's authorised signatory of its accounts, maintained in various banks and as Mamata Banerjee's authorised point person to appear before the Election Commission. This has triggered speculations on whether she had severed her ties with the party for all practical purposes.

The disgruntled leader, a former minister in the erstwhile Mamata Banerjee government – in charge of key departments like Finance and Health as Minister of state, and the chief of its women's wing – was named state president at the party's national working committee meeting held at Mamata Banerjee's Kalighat residence on June 5, replacing senior leader Subrata Bakshi.

A three-time MLA, Bhattacharya lost to the BJP’s Sourav Sikdar at the Dum Dum Uttar constituency in the 2026 assembly elections.

‘Credibility questioned’

According to local media reports, Bhattacharya has said she resigned from the post of the party’s state president because her credibility was being questioned.

The reports, quoting sources, further stated that Mamata suspected Chandrima of being involved in Friday's dispute over the Metropolitan Building.

"I hereby resign from the post of All India State President of the Trinamool Congress, to which I was appointed at the Kalighat meeting on June 3. I also resign from all other positions that I currently hold,” stated Bhattacharya in her resignation letter.

'Did you hand over the building?'

Asked whether she would return if the Banerjee called her, Chandrima said, "This is not about returning. When your credibility comes under question, you cannot return to that place,” reported Anandabazar Patrika.

"Everyone knows what happened on Friday. Several MLAs had gone to the Metropolitan Building. While I was there, none of those MLAs spoke to me. After I returned home, Mamata-di asked me to call her. When I did, she asked, 'Did you hand over the building to them?’” she added.

Asked whether she was also quitting Mamata's party along with her posts, Chandrima replied, "Many matters are under consideration."
