Vidhi Meghani, a Gujarat student pursuing studies in Canada, was stabbed to death in the Niagara region. Police have launched a murder investigation


A woman from Gujarat, studying in Canada, has been stabbed to death in the Niagara region. According to local police, the incident took place on May 15. However, the investigators said that the motive behind the attack was yet to be ascertained.

Living in Canada for four years

The police have identified the victim as Vidhi Kalpeshbhai Meghani, a resident of Borsad in Gujarat’s Anand district. According to a report in NDTV, she has been living in Canada for four years and was also doing part-time jobs to support herself.

Police said the woman was attacked in broad daylight in the Niagara region and suffered multiple stab injuries. Passers-by and residents shifted her to a nearby hospital soon after the incident, where doctors declared her dead.

Probe underway

According to investigators, the victim had been pursuing law studies in Canada. Officials said that she had been planning to apply for Permanent Residency (PR).

The incident took place on May 15 shortly after she stepped out of her residence in the Niagara area. Canadian police have registered a murder case and launched a manhunt to trace the accused. Officials associated with the probe said the suspect was likely to be arrested soon.

Recent attacks on Indian students

The killing has once again drawn attention to a string of recent cases involving Indian students in Canada. In December 2025, 20-year-old doctoral student Shivank Awasthi was shot dead near the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto. His body was later recovered near Highland Creek Trail.

Earlier in April 2025, Harsimrat Randhawa, a 21-year-old Indian student, died after being hit by a stray bullet at a bus stop in Hamilton during a shootout between two groups.

In December 2024, Harshdeep Singh Antal, a 20-year-old Sikh student from India, was shot dead while working as a security guard at a residential apartment complex in Edmonton.
