Toronto shooting: Indian-origin woman shot dead in targeted attack; accused held
According to the eye witness, a man approached her, briefly spoke to her for about 30 seconds and then fired a single shot before walking away from the scene
A 26-year-old Indian-origin woman was shot dead in a targeted attack in Toronto, Canada, on Friday, with police arresting a 37-year-old man in connection with the killing. The victim, Navneet Kaur, was fatally shot in the Etobicoke area, marking Toronto's 22nd homicide of 2026.
Toronto Police said Kaur was attacked near the intersection of Humberwood Boulevard and Rexdale Boulevard at around 7.23 am local time. According to investigators, a man approached her, briefly spoke to her for about 30 seconds and then fired a single shot before walking away from the scene.

Emergency responders rushed to the spot and attempted life-saving measures, but Kaur succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Accused fled the scene
The accused, identified as 37-year-old Sharnjeet Singh of Brampton, initially fled after the shooting. Police launched a search operation involving multiple units, including drones, a K9 team and assistance from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), before locating and arresting him.

Singh has been charged with first-degree murder and failing to comply with an undertaking. According to Ontario court records, he had been released on bail on July 18, just six days before the fatal shooting.
‘Targeted attack’
Addressing reporters, Duty Inspector Scott Bradbury said investigators believe the incident was a targeted attack and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. "We feel this is a localised issue, meaning that this woman was targeted, and that there are no extra risk to the neighbours," Bradbury said.
Police have not disclosed a possible motive or clarified whether the accused and the victim knew each other. The homicide unit is continuing its investigation and has appealed to anyone with information related to the case to come forward.
