NEET protests: Which states have withdrawn cases against protesters?
The CJP said that the Union government had assured that no punitive action would be taken against those who participated in the recent nationwide agitation
After the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) expressed “grave concern” over reports that students and other protesters were being detained or arrested in some states over NEET paper leak protests, at least three states have decided to withdraw cases against the protesters.

What CJP said
As per latest reports on Tuesday (July 28), Bihar, Assam and Maharashtra have decided to withdraw cases against students, and the CJP said it has received a “guarantee” of the same from Rajasthan government. West Bengal is also likely to follow suit.

“After Bihar and Assam notifications, we have just been guaranteed that no authority will proceed against protesters in Rajasthan. No FIRs have been registered. None will be,” CJP’s spokesperson Saurav Das said in a post on X (Formerly Twitter).
“We are continuously working to ensure all other risky BJP/NDA states release notifications in the required language in protester’s interest. We will never let any youth fight this alone! (sic),” he added.

In another post, he said on Tuesday, “Hours after our press conference, Government’s representatives met us. The meeting lasted for 2-3 hours. They shared copies of the Bihar and Assam notifications guaranteeing FIR withdrawals, no action in future, and release of all detainees and arrestees.
“They’ve reiterated their promise of releasing guarantee-notifications by union government and other BJP/NDA states by tomorrow. Hopefully, the agreed upon language shall be used. No protester will be left alone. We are all in this together! (sic).”
Bihar govt’s statement
On Monday, the Bihar government announced that it will withdraw all cases lodged against protesters over the NEET paper leak and release those jailed under various charges.
A statement to this effect was issued by the state’s Home Department, which said that “no adverse legal action – punitive/retaliatory - shall be taken by the government against any individual participating in the protests before 6 pm on 26.07.2026”.
According to the police, altogether 694 people had been detained for enforcing the Bihar bandh called on July 25 by pro-Left students’ unions and, after letting off 339 minors, the remaining 355 were booked under relevant laws, and were facing trial before the courts concerned.
The statement made it clear that the “legal process for withdrawal of all FIRs, criminal complaints and show-cause notices” against individuals who took part in the protests “will be initiated immediately”.
“Furthermore, all the persons arrested/detained in connection with the cases… shall be released immediately”, and “no action, directly or indirectly will be taken against such individuals in future as well”, it said.
What Assam govt said
The Assam government also said it is withdrawing cases against those involved in NEET protests in the state.
"A of 6:00 PM on 26.07.2026, a total of five cases had been registered in the State of Assam in connection with the protests relating to the alleged irregularities in the NEET (UG) examination, resulting in the arrest of 13 person," a notification from the government of Assam said.
It said that the process of withdrawing the registered cases, irrespective of the stage of the process within the state, will be initiated as per law promptly.
Maharashtra and Bengal
In Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the Home Department to withdraw cases registered against the students involved in NEET protests in the state.
In West Bengal, the BJP government is set to take a decision no withdrawing cases on Tuesday, reports said citing sources. As per reports, seven cases have been registered in Kolkata and around 70 persons have been identified.
The CJP protest, which began at New Delhi’s Jantar Mantar, spread to various cities in the country. It ended after 36 days following the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, which was the CJP’s principal demand to the Centre.
