JK Police raids multiple locations across valley in cyber terror case
The Counter Intelligence wing of Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday carried out raids at multiple locations in the valley as part of its investigations in a cyber terror case, officials said.
The Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK) unleashed a massive crackdown on mule accounts as the police tightened its noose on such accounts fuelling cyber frauds and terror funding, they said.
The officials said that as part of its investigations into the cyber terror case, the CIK carried out raids at 22 locations in the Kashmir valley, including 15 places in the Srinagar city.
Further details were awaited, they added.

Maharashtra Congress vice president dies after being stabbed at mosque in Akola
Maharashtra Congress vice president Hidayatullah Patel, who was stabbed at a mosque in Akola district, succumbed to his injuries during treatment on Wednesday morning, police said.
The alleged attacker has been arrested, they said.
Patel (66) was attacked with a sharp weapon by the accused over an old enmity at around 1.30 pm on Tuesday after he offered namaz at a mosque in Mohala village in Akot taluka of the district, the police said.
The former district Congress president suffered injuries to his neck and chest, resulting in heavy bleeding.
He was rushed to a private hospital in Akot and admitted to its intensive care unit where he died on Wednesday morning, a police official said.

5 Delhi Police personnel injured as anti-encroachment drive near mosque turns violent
At least five police personnel were injured after an anti-encroachment drive near a mosque in Delhi's Ramlila Maidan area turned violent early Wednesday.
The clashes erupted when officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were carrying out a demolition drive on land adjoining the Syed Faiz Elahi Mosque and a nearby graveyard at Turkman Gate, following directions of the Delhi High Court.
During the operation, some people allegedly resorted to stone pelting, triggering chaos at the site. Police later said the situation was brought under control with measured force.
According to police, extensive law and order arrangements were made in advance, with senior officers deployed across multiple zones. Coordination meetings were held with members of local peace committees.
Normalcy was restored shortly after the incident, police said in a statement.

Delhi residents face health issues amid poor air quality and dense fog
Chilly north-westerly winds and a dense fog made for a very cold day in Delhi on Tuesday. A yellow alert was issued for similar conditions in isolated pockets on Wednesday (January 7), too.
The maximum temperature at Safdarjung fell to 15.7 degrees Celsius, over three notches below normal. Palam saw 13°C, six degrees below normal, and Lodhi Road 15.8°C, five notches below normal.
A ‘cold day' is declared when the minimum temperature is below 10°C and the departure of maximum temperature from the normal is 4.5 notches or more.

NMC revokes recognition of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence in Jammu
The National Medical Commission (NMC) has revoked the recognition of Jammu-based Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Institute of Medical Excellence (SMVDIME), citing huge lapses in minimum standards. Existing students of the medical college will be transferred to other recognised institutions in Jammu and Kashmir.
The college has been embroiled in a political row over its admission data. In the 2025-26 academic year, 42 of the 50 students in the inaugural batch were Muslims, and one was a Sikh. The composition triggered intense protests from several groups in Jammu.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (January 6) said Prime Minister Narendra Modi is "not that happy with me" because of the tariffs imposed by Washington on Delhi for its purchases of Russian oil.
Trump, delivering remarks at the House GOP Member Retreat, also claimed that “Prime Minister Modi came to see me, ‘Sir, may I see you please’. Yes." "I have a very good relationship with him. He's not that happy with me because you know they're paying a lot of tariffs now because they're not doing the oil, but they are, they've now reduced it very substantially, as you know, from Russia,” Trump said.

White House: US looking at options to acquire Greenland, may use military
US President Donald Trump has been looking at "a range of options" to acquire Greenland, including the use of the military, the White House said, according to a BBC report.
The White House told the BBC that acquiring Greenland - a semi-autonomous region of fellow Nato member Denmark – was a "national security priority". The statement came hours after European leaders issued a joint statement rallying behind Denmark, which has been pushing back against Trump's ambitions for the Arctic island.

Schools up to class 8 in Noida shut till Jan 10 due to cold wave
Authorities in Uttar Pradesh's Gautam Buddh Nagar district have ordered the closure of all schools up to class 8 till January 10 in view of the dense fog and severe cold conditions, officials said on Tuesday. The order applies to all recognised schools affiliated with the CBSE, ICSE, IB, the Uttar Pradesh Board and other boards operating in the district, District Basic Education Officer Rahul Panwar said in an official order.

Punjab 'gangster' accused in murder case of sarpanch in Amritsar killed in encounter
An alleged gangster, who was an accused in the murder case of a village head in Punjab's Amritsar, was killed in an exchange of fire with police in Tarn Taran district on Tuesday. Harnoor Singh, a gangster working with criminal operatives Afridi and Prabh Dassuwal, was killed in the police encounter, officials said.
He was one of the accused in the murder case of Sarpanch Jharmal Singh, who was also a leader of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
