Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal today (September 20) moved the Women's Reservation Bill for consideration and passage in the Lok Sabha, saying it is a step towards women empowerment.

The constitutional amendment bill was introduced in the Lower House on Tuesday. It was the first bill introduced in the new Parliament building. Issue of principles and beliefs, says Amit Shah

Get a caste census done at the earliest: Rahul

Treasury Benches disrupt Rahul's speech, Congress side hits back saying you are anti-BJP. LS Speaker Om Birla intervenes to point out the discussion is on women's reservation, not OBCs. Rahul says discussion is about transfer of power and OBC deserve equal share in transfer of power to women. Rahul says obvious questions arise for the enumeration of OBCs through caste census. I support the Bill but it should be immediately implemented and not be stalled till census and delimitation. Get a caste census done at the earliest and also release the data of caste census conducted during our (UPA) time.

    Bill is incomplete: Rahul

Rahul Gandhi: I support the Women's Reservation Bill. Yesterday there was talk about the Sengol and the symbolism of the transfer of power... from our inception, we gave a vote to all people and that was a sign of transfer of real power. .. in many ways the fight taking place today is between transferring power and taking it away. The panchayati raj reservation for women was the first step of real transfer of power to women and today, this (WRB) is yet another good step... in my view there is one thing that makes this Bill look incomplete. There should have been reservation for OBC women in this Bill. A large chunk of women being excluded from this Bill. The other 2 strange provisions in the Bill are the requirement of Census and delimitation before implementation. Is this not designed to push the ball forward by 8 to 10 years and then see how things go forward.. my friends always want to take attention away from other issues, Adani being one of them... This is a nice building, nice peacocks on the walls and elsewhere but I would have liked to see the President of India in this House.. the other thing the government wants to distract from is the demand for a caste census. I took a look at the different institutions that define how this country moves forward; LS, RS, judiciary, press... and I looked at the participation of OBC population in these institutions. The most important set of people who define how this govt functions are the 90 secretaries in various departments. I asked how many of them are from the OBC community. I was shocked at the answer. Only 3 are OBCs and these secretaries control just 5 percent of India's Budget.

TMC MP dares BJP to raise women's quota to 40%

Trinamool Congress member Kakoli Ghosh-Dastidar invoked famous song 'catch me if you can' dedicated to legendary boxer Muhammad Ali to dare the BJP to match the 40 per cent reservation for women already implemented by her party for Lok Sabha elections.
"Catch me if you can, all of the political parties here, catch Mamata Banerjee and AITC (All India Trinamool Congress) and make it 40 per cent and not 33 per cent," she said, while participating in the discussion on the women's reservation bill in the Lok Sabha.
Ghosh-Dastidar said she was referring to the popular song dedicated to legendary boxer Cassius Clay, who changed his name to Muhammad Ali.
She was referring to TMC chief and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee putting up 40 per cent women candidates in the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state during the 2019 general elections.
Ghosh-Dastidar said even in the West Bengal government, Banerjee has allocated important portfolios such as health, law, women's empowerment and industry that were held by women legislators.
"We in Trinamool Congress get that much respect for being here (in the Lok Sabha) in great numbers," she said.
