Bangladesh urges India to fast-track Sheikh Hasina's extradition
Bangladesh has asked India to speed up Sheikh Hasina’s extradition and return suspects in the Shahid Osman Hadi murder case during bilateral talks
Days after former Bangladesh Prime Minister and Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina expressed apprehension of imprisonment and a death sentence upon her return to the country in December, the neighbouring country on Monday (August 10) stated that it was hopeful of India expediting her extradition. The development took place during a meeting between Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Trivedi made a courtesy visit to the Bangladesh Prime Minister in the Cabinet Division at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
"Bangladesh expressed hope that India will expedite the extradition process of Sheikh Hasina,” said a statement issued by the Bangladesh Prime Minister’s office, as reported by i.
Dhaka seeks return of Hadi’s ‘killers’
Dhaka also urged New Delhi to ensure the return of individuals whom it claims were involved in the murder of Shahid Osman Hadi, a student leader who played a key role in the July uprising that led to Hasina’s ouster. He was shot dead on December 12, 2025.

"At the same time, Bangladesh reiterated its request to India to return the killers involved in the murder of Shahid Osman Hadi," the statement added.
During the meeting, also attended by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman, Prime Minister's Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir and other senior officials, Tarique Rahman stressed the need to ensure a suitable environment for the smooth progress of Indo-Bangladesh bilateral ties.
Hasina's return plan
The development comes days after Hasina took part in a virtual interaction from New Delhi on August 5, organised by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia on the second anniversary of her ouster following the 2024 student-led uprising.

During the interaction, Hasina said she intended to return to Bangladesh in December to place the country on the "right track" through the restoration of democracy, despite the possibility of imprisonment or a death sentence upon her return.
Bangladesh's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded by lodging a formal protest, stating that the remarks had affected public sentiment and complicated efforts to strengthen bilateral ties.
What MEA had said
India distanced itself from the event. Responding to media queries, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, "The interaction you refer to is being organised by a private media entity. The government has no involvement whatsoever in it. Neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum."
