Stock markets rebound in early trade after two days of sharp fall

Equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty bounced back sharply on Tuesday (March 10) in early trade after two days of massive decline, following a drop in crude oil prices and recovery in global markets amid hopes that the conflict in West Asia could conclude soon.

The 30-share BSE Sensex rebounded 809.57 points to 78,375.73 in opening trade. The 50-share NSE Nifty climbed 252.75 points to 24,280.80.

Brent crude, the global oil benchmark, tumbled 5.18 per cent to USD 93.83 per barrel.

"Comments from Donald Trump suggesting that the US–Israel conflict with Iran could conclude soon have triggered a decline in crude oil prices and the US dollar, helping restore risk appetite across global markets,” Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, an online trading and wealth tech firm, said.

From the 30-Sensex firms, InterGlobe Aviation, UltraTech Cement, Asian Paints, Adani Ports, Mahindra & Mahindra and Titan were among the major gainers. Reliance Industries, Infosys, Eternal, HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra were among the laggards.

Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth Rs 6,345.57 crore on Monday, according to exchange data. Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs), however, bought stocks worth Rs 9,013.80 crore.

Karur stampede: Senthil Balaji to appear before CBI on March 17

Amid conflicting media reports regarding the Central Bureau of Investigation’s (CBI) efforts to question him, DMK leader and Karur MLA V Senthil Balaji issued a detailed clarification on Tuesday (March 10), confirming that he received a formal summons to appear before the agency on March 17 concerning the deadly Karur stampede last year.

In a statement, the former Tamil Nadu minister addressed what he described as “contradictory reports” circulating in certain sections of the press. “Based on the summons sent by the CBI asking me to appear in person and provide clarification on March 17 in connection with the Karur tragic incident, I will appear before them and provide appropriate explanations to their questions,” he said.

The clarification comes a day after reports emerged that the CBI had attempted to serve a summons on Senthil Balaji for questioning on March 9 (Monday), but the notice was neither accepted at his residence or office nor responded to via email. Multiple news outlets and agency sources confirmed on March 9 that the former minister’s staff had refused to receive the physical summons, and no response had been received to the emailed copy.

It is the first time the Karur MLA has been officially called for questioning in the high-profile probe, even as the CBI continues to intensify its investigation into the stampede that claimed 41 lives.

The inclusion of Karur MLA V Senthil Balaji in the probe is significant. As the sitting legislator from the constituency where the tragedy occurred and a senior DMK leader who previously served as a minister, his statement is expected to shed light on local administrative clearances, police deployment, and coordination with the event organisers. Sources indicate the CBI is examining whether adequate precautions were taken at the ground level, including providing buffer zones, medical facilities, and ambulance access areas where obstructions reportedly delayed rescue operations.
