Ranveer Singh vs FWICE: Everything you need to know about the Don 3 row

From a contractual dispute over Don 3 to a full-blown legal war, here is everything you need to know about the Ranveer Singh-FWICE standoff

What began as a behind-the-scenes contractual disagreement between actor Ranveer Singh and filmmaker Farhan Akhtar's production house Excel Entertainment has snowballed into a public legal battle involving one of Bollywood's most powerful trade bodies. The Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) on June 3 withdrew its non-cooperation directive against Ranveer, days after the actor fired back with a legal notice against the film body. FWICE, however, said it would respond to the notice "in a legal way" and invited Ranveer to resolve the matter amicably.

How it all began

At the heart of the dispute is Don 3, the much-anticipated third instalment of the Don franchise, produced by Excel Entertainment, co-owned by Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani. Ranveer Singh, who was set to step into the iconic role, allegedly walked out of the project days before shooting was scheduled to begin. Excel Entertainment claimed the sudden exit caused significant financial losses, and lodged a complaint with FWICE. The production house sought compensation of Rs 40 crore from Ranveer over the fallout.

Allegations against Ranveer

Beyond the abrupt exit, Ranveer was also accused of demanding changes to the script and shoot locations after all logistics had been finalised. Veteran filmmaker Kuku Kohli, General Secretary of the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), reflected a widely-held industry sentiment when he said that asking for too many changes after everything is planned is avoidable.

Ranveer's recent successes at the box office with Dhurandhar appear to have added a layer of complexity to the dispute. Industry insiders have been vocal about the possibility that the string of hits may have shifted the power dynamic, with rumours about the actor has growing difficult to work with.

India Today quoted, Kuku Kohli, the General Secretary of Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA), as saying, "They (Ranveer Singh and Excel) should sit down and talk. They need to arrive at a mutually agreeable solution internally. Ranveer also needs to realise that Excel is a reputed production house. Asking for too many changes in script and locations after everything is planned is avoidable."

Legal notice and FWICE's retreat

Faced with FWICE's non-cooperation directive, which called upon its five lakh-odd members across 34 vendor associations to refuse work with Ranveer, the actor escalated the matter by sending a formal legal notice to the film body on June 3. The content of the legal notice has not been made public yet, and it is likely to be revealed soon by the film body. Faced with the legal challenge, FWICE withdrew the directive on June 3, though Ranveer's notice against the body remains in force.

In the statement, the film body stated, the decision was taken "after careful thought, introspection, and constructive discussions, keeping in mind the collective sentiments and larger welfare of the film fraternity." Acknowledging IMPPA as one of the country's oldest and most respected producer bodies, FWICE placed on record its gratitude for the association's "timely intervention, valuable guidance, and earnest efforts in resolving this matter." The film body said it remained committed to resolving differences within the fraternity through dialogue, mutual understanding, and responsible cooperation rather than prolonged discord.

Ranveer's upcoming projects

It continues to be unclear if Ranveer's legal action will continue despite the formal withdrawal of the ban on him by the film body, or if he would also stop himself from pursuing legal action against the body. The stand on Excel Production on the issue also needs to be seen given they are the one facing the monetary consequence of the ongoing issue.

Meanwhile, Ranveer Singh hasn't confirmed about his upcoming projects yet after the back-to-to hits with Dhruandhar films. With the legal battle now public and both sides preparing formal responses, the question of who will blink first remains unanswered.
