Mumbai’s ‘crime against women’ data belies CM’s claim

Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray may claim that his government won’t tolerate crime against women, but statistics tell a different story altogether.

National Crime Record Bureau’s (NCRB) ‘Crime in India Report 2019’ states that Maharashtra reported the highest number of rape with murder incidents across the country.

As per the data, 6,519 cases of crime against women were registered by Mumbai police in 2019, second only to Delhi which registered 12,902 cases. Though Uttar Pradesh (59,853) has the highest number of crime against women cases, Maharashtra (37,144) ranks third after Rajasthan (41,550).

The country’s financial capital reported maximum cases of sexual harassment on public transport. Mumbai’s 16 cases were followed by Pune (10) and Delhi (eight).

Mumbai recorded the highest number of cases (14) for use of children in pornography while Maharashtra reported 18 cases.

In kidnapping and sexual assault of woman below the age of 18, Mumbai ranks second behind Delhi with 1,269 cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. Mumbai has recorded the second highest cases of kidnapping and abduction of women at 1,327 cases after Delhi (3,398).

According to NCRB dats for the year 2019, a total of 278 cases of rape with murder were registered across the country, of which Maharashtra has reported the highest i.e. 47, followed by Madhya Pradesh (37) and Uttar Pradesh (34).

Maharashtra ranks fourth with 2,299 rape cases behind Rajasthan (5,997), Uttar Pradesh (3,065) and Madhya Pradesh (2,485).

A total of 575 cases for insulting the modesty of a woman were registered in Mumbai alone in the year 2019.

When asked to comment on the alleged rape and murder of a Dalit woman in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh, a few days back, Thackeray had said: “Hathras-like incidents will never be tolerated in Maharashtra. For that matter, any kind of crime against women, including harassment and eve-teasing, would be dealt with severely.”
