Mumbai mall goes up in flames, over 3,000 evacuated in vicinity

A massive fire broke out in Mumbai City Centre mall, on Thursday (October 22), leading to the evacuation of more than 3,000 people in a 55-storey building nearby.

No casualties or injuries have been reported.

As many as 24 fire engines having over 250 fire fighters and seven jetties are trying to put out the fire which has been raging since Thursday evening.

Two fireman also sustained injuries during the dousing process and were rushed to the JJ Hospital.

Reports said the fire erupted in the mall at around 8.53 pm when 200 to 300 people were inside the premises.

Reports said the fire which was initially categorised as Level 1 was upgraded to Level 2 (major fire) when the flames spread to different part of the shopping mall. It later worsened to a Level 5 fire, forcing the Mumbai fire brigade to declare it a brigade call and seeking help of HPCL, BPCL and BPT.

The cause of the fire is not known yet and is being investigated.
