TN sees 669 new COVID-19 cases, overtakes Delhi with 7000+ cases

Tamil Nadu on Sunday (May 10) reported three deaths and 669 COVID-19 positive cases, taking the total count of the state to 7,204 and overtaking Delhi as the state with the third-highest number of cases.

Tamil Nadu on Sunday (May 10) reported three deaths and 669 COVID-19 positive cases, taking the total count of the state to 7,204 and overtaking Delhi as the state with the third-highest number of cases.

According to the health department, of the 12,692 people tested on May 10, 669 came out positive. The total number of active cases in the state stands at 5,195. As many as 1,959 people have been discharged.

A 74-year-old man from Chengalpattu who was admitted on May 8 at Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital died on the same day at 12.20 pm. He was one of the three patients who were reported of testing COVID-19 positive on Sunday. Another 59-year-old man from Chennai with diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease was admitted to Stanley Medical College Hospital on May 7 and died in the wee hours of May 10.

Another 55-year-old man, a resident of Tiruvallur, suffering from chronic kidney disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus and systemic hypertension, who was admitted to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital on May 4 died in the wee hours of May 9. He also tested positive for the virus on Sunday.

Tamil Nadu has recorded 47 deaths due to COVID-19 so far.

Among the cases reported on Sunday, 509 were from Chennai, 43 from Chengalpattu and 47 from Tiruvalllur.

The spike in the number of cases in the last one week has been attributed to the Koyambedu market cluster. According to sources, until Saturday (May 9), as many 1,867 cases were linked to the Koyambedu market cluster, of which 852 were considered as the primary sources and 1,015 were the contacts of the primary sources.

The Koyambedu cluster has affected as many as 26 districts, as several wholesale dealers from across the state buy vegetables from there. The worst affected were Chennai, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Villupuram and Tiruvallur, which have more than 100 cases each from Koyambedu market cluster alone.

Erode and Sivagangai districts have zero active cases, while Coimbatore, Tirupur, Salem, Karur, Dharmapuri, Tiruvarur, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Pudukottai, Nilgiris, Nagapattinam and Kanyakumari districts have reported less than 10 active cases.

Amid the rising number of cases on Sunday, the state government has allowed opening of as many as 33 types of industries and shops across the state including tea shops, restaurants, electric, electronic shops, two-wheeler and four-wheeler show-rooms.
