Tamil Nadu police on Tuesday (November 27) busted a gang growing marijuana in 1.5 acres in Karur district and arrested two persons. Police have arrested Murugan and Thangavel, both a native of Theni district.

Speaking to The Federal, a senior officer said that the two were related and were peddling drugs in and around Coimbatore region.

“As the two had to spend a lot of money in purchasing marijuana from the wholesalers, they started growing it few years ago,” a senior official said.

According to the Karur Superintendent of Police R Pandirajan, the farmland belongs to Zaheer Hussain from Bengaluru and had given it on lease to a person named Arunachalam.

“Arunachalam, the prime accused had deployed Murugan and Thangavel to cultivate the crop. It seems that the plants are two to three months old,” Pandirajan said. The estimated value of the find is believed to be over ₹15 lakh. The police, however, are still quizzing the duo to find if they had such cultivation anywhere else.
