Update: 2019-12-21 17:16 GMT

Two men were hacked to death in full public view on Saturday (December 21) morning after they were involved in a gang war between three groups in Tiruvallur district. The deceased were identified as B Jeeva and R Gopi of Periya Kancheepuram.

According to the police, the victims were believed to be gang members of Sridhar, who was murdered over gang rivalry.

“Around 10.30 am on Saturday, unknown assailants hurled country bombs on the duo when they were travelling to Thakkolam from Thirupachur. Thereafter, a gang of about eight men emerged from the roadside bushed and started attacking Jeeva and Gopi. The gang left the spot only after confirming that the two were dead,” police said quoting an eye-witness.

An officer investigating the case said the murder was part of an ongoing gang war between the groups led by gangsters, Kancheepuram Sridhar, Thanika and Thiyagu.

“Members of the three gangs have been involved in the illegal businesses, including smuggling of red sandalwood and illicit substances, for nearly a decade. Ever since Kancheepuram Sridhar was killed a couple of years ago, there has been a tussle between the three gangs on who would take over the market in Kancheepuram. In the rivalry that ensued over the issue, at least six men have been killed in a span of two years,” police said.

Mappedu police in Tiruvallur have registered a case under section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code and are probing the matter. Police are also in the process of collecting CCTV footages from in and around the area.

Tiruvallur Superintendent of Police Aravindan visited the spot and have formed a special team to nab gangsters in the district.
