A week after DMK general secretary K Anbazhagan passed away, senior party leader Duraimurugan is set to contest for the post, party chief MK Stalin said on Monday. Earlier, Duraimurugan quit as the treasurer of the party.

On Monday, Stalin said Duraimurugan has informed him through a letter, his willingness to contest for the general secretary’s post.

Anbazhagan (97), a close confidant of former Chief Minister, the late M Karunanidhi, died on March 7 following a brief illness. He had held the general secretary post for 43 years.

On Sunday, Stalin had announced that the party’s highest decision-making body, the general council, will meet on March 29 to elect Anbazhagan’s successor. The general council will also elect the treasurer, Stalin said and urged that all the members should attend without fail.
