There’s more bad news for former chief minister Chandrababu Naidu’s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) after its humiliating defeat in the Assembly elections. According to a report by the Hindustan Times, the newly sworn-in Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy of the YSR Congress Party has decided to revoke the withdrawal of the general consent for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to operate in the state.

The Naidu government had withdrawn the ‘general consent’ on August 3, 2018, barring the CBI and other central agencies from operating and conducting investigations in the state.

The CBI, which functions under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, requires the consent of a state to conduct investigations in state establishments.

The move was confirmed by YSRCP general secretary Vijaysai Reddy V. In a tweet on June 3 (Monday), he attacked the TDP president, saying, “The thieves are not safe. Do you see Chandrababu?”

Following Naidu, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee too had issued a similar order, restraining the central agency from conducting raids on non-central establishments.

The two leaders had alleged that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was misusing the central agency against Opposition party leaders.
