Police probe letter written by DSP who was killed in Kanpur ambush: Report

As Vikas Dubey — a prime accused in the Kanpur ambush case — is on the run, a letter reportedly written by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devendra Kumar Mishra, who, along with seven other police personnel, was shot dead at a village in Uttar Pradesh, is doing the rounds on social media.

The police department has begun the probe into the letter, which could prove if policemen had helped the criminals, NDTV reported. The move comes a day after the department suspended four of policemen on suspicion that they had tipped off Vikas Dubey whose gang members killed the policemen in an ambush in Bikru village.

The police had begun the preliminary investigation at the offices of the DSP and Kanpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), NDTV quoted Dinesh Kumar, Kanpur SSP, as saying. “So far there are no records of this letter and we have found no file. But we are looking at it with more details and we will not hesitate to share more details,” he said.

On July 03, the policemen had gone to Bikru village to arrest Dubey, who has around 60 criminal cases, including murder, kidnapping, extortion and rioting, pending against him. after snatching weapons from the police personnel, the criminals had opened fire at the team from the rooftops, the police had said.

Even after three days, the police could not nab Dubey. So, the department on July 06 increased the bounty for his capture from ₹1 lakh to ₹2.5 lakh. The police had also formed over 25 teams to capture the history-sheeter. They had also set up a surveillance team that had been scanning more than 500 mobile phones to track him.
