Bhim Army chief Chandrashekar Azad on Sunday (October 4) demanded Y Plus category security for the family of the Hathras alleged rape and murder victim.

Azad who reached the victim’s house on Sunday and interacted with the family, made the demand, in view of the threat faced by the family from the police and upper caste people in the village.

“If ‘Y Plus’ category security cover can be provided to actor Kangana Ranaut, than why can it not be provided to the family of the victim?,” he said, according to Hindustan Times, and added that he will gherao the Assembly if his demands were not met.

Azad said the family was not safe in Hathras and demanded a probe under the supervision of the Supreme Court.

The UP government late on Saturday transferred the case to CBI from the Special Investigation Team.

The woman was allegedly gangraped and tortured by upper caste men, leading to her death in a Delhi hospital. The UP police then forcibly cremated her body against the family’s wishes at around 3 am, and later also restricted entry to media and political leaders.

Azad’s visit comes a day after Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi met the family on Saturday following nation-wide protests that were reminiscent of the 2012 agitation following the brutal gangrape and murder of a physiotherapy student on a moving bus in Delhi.

UP police allowed restricted movement of leaders and media to the Hathras village on Saturday, but some reports said the family of the woman were made to sign a document saying they were satisfied with the police action.

Meanwhile, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has asked police and officials to handle cases concerning women, girls, Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) with sensitivity.

“Attempts must be made to sort out various problems through dialogue with the affected people. The police should act promptly and deal with sensitivity in cases related to women, girls, SCs and STs,” he said, according to HT.
