'Mastermind' of Patiala clashes arrested in Mohali

Barjinder Singh Pawana, the alleged mastermind of the Patiala clashes, was arrested in Mohali on Sunday morning, police said.

A fierce face-off was witnessed on Friday between members of Shiv Sena, who had called an anti-Khalistan rally, and sword-brandishing Nihangs outside the Kali Maa temple in Punjab’s Patiala. Four people including two policemen were injured after the two groups resorted to stone pelting.

Range Inspector General MS Chhina told the media that police have filed six cases into the incident and arrested two people so far.

The arrested persons are Harish Singla, Kuldeep Singh Danthal and Daljit Singh.

Taking strong exception to the incident, the leadership of Shiv Sena in Mumbai on Friday had instructed its Punjab unit to take strict action against party workers involved in the violence. The Sena also said that it has expelled local leader Harish Singla, who had led the anti-Khalistan march.

This is the first such law-and-order situation witnessed in the state after the Aam Aadmi Party took over the reins of Punjab.
