The Bhagwant Mann-led government on Saturday announced 300 units of free power to every household in Punjab from July 1.
The announcement – made by the information and public relations department – came as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) completed one month in power in the state.
Chief Minister Mann had on Tuesday said he would soon give a “good news” to the people of the state.
“Had a wonderful meeting with our leader and Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal. Very soon, will give good news to the people of Punjab,” he had said in a tweet.
Providing up to 300 units of free electricity to every household was one of AAP’s major electoral promises.
In the run-up to the assembly election earlier this year, AAP convener and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that, despite surplus power production in the state, long power cuts were being imposed and people were getting inflated bills.
“There are many people in villages who got ‘wrong’ bills and their power connections were cut because of non-payment and such people resorted to stealing power,” Kejriwal had said.
In Delhi, the Kejriwal government provides 200 units of free power per month.
In his first cabinet decision on March 19, Mann threw open 25,000 jobs in various state government departments, including 10,000 in the police department.
