Rains, hailstorm lash Delhi; 8 flights diverted

Update: 2022-05-30 14:49 GMT

Heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds lashed parts of Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) on Monday, leading to uprooting of trees, power outages and causing damage to properties in several parts of the city.

At least eight flights were diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad and Dehradun due to the inclement weather.

Several parts of the city experienced hailstorm, stalling traffic.

Delhi Police tweeted that a 50-year-old man from Jama Masjid area died after a balcony collapsed on him in the aftermath of the hailstorm and rain.

Uprooted trees at Bhai Vir Singh Marg, Connaught Place, Janpath Road and Sanchar Bhawan brought traffic to a standstill, making navigation for commuters a tricky affair.

Visuals shared by ANI on Twitter showed uprooted trees at the residence of BJP MP Parvesh Verma at Janpath Road.

Another visual showed a bus trapped under an uprooted tree at Sanchar Bhawan following a hailstorm.

In view of the bad weather, airlines warned flyers on social media about likely disruption in weather.

The change in weather, however, brought much-needed respite to the residents who suffered a sultry morning, and days of scorching heat.

The rain was accompanied by roaring clouds and winds that swept the city at a speed of 50 km/hr.

Delhi had recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season’s average, with the weather department predicting overcast conditions for the city on Monday.

The relative humidity at 8.30 am was 63 per cent. The maximum temperature is likely to hover around 41 degrees Celsius. On Sunday evening, parts of the national capital received light rain with the maximum temperature settling at 40.7 degrees Celsius, normal for this time of the season.
