Arvind Kejriwal to meet protesting farmer union leaders tomorrow

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will meet farmer union leaders protesting against the three agriculture laws on Sunday (February 21). Officials said he will discuss the farm laws, among other issues, with them.

Kejriwal will meet them on the premises of the Delhi assembly. The Delhi Chief Minister has been supporting the farmers’ protests. Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and other states have been agitating near the Delhi borders since November-end demanding that the farm laws be repealed.

Kejriwal has met the protesters many times during the past three months to lend his support, has arranged water supply to them and criticised the Delhi police for creating hurdles in reaching help to the farmers.

AAP had recently fared poorly in the Punjab urban body polls, which were swept by the Congress. Kejriwal’s party had hit out at Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s government in Punjab for its handling of the protests. The outcome of the elections is being seen as a reflection of the farmer’s mood against the Centre.

The protesters have demanded the withdrawal of the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020.

The farm laws were passed by Parliament in September 2020.
