The Election Commission on Saturday (January 25) banned BJP candidate Kapil Mishra from campaigning for the upcoming Delhi assembly polls for 48 hours following his controversial tweets in which he likened the February 8 elections to an Indian versus Pakistan contest.
The ban order, signed by the chief election commissioner and two fellow election commissioners, would come into force from 5 PM on Saturday, poll officials said.
While Twitter had taken down one of his controversial tweets on Friday following directions of the EC, an FIR was lodged against him under section 125 of the Representation of the People Act dealing with creating enmity among classes.
Mishra is a candidate from Delhi’s Model Town constituency. He is pitted against AAP’s Akhilesh Pati Tripathi and Congress’s Akansha Ola. Delhi goes to poll on February 8 and the counting of votes would take place on February 11.
