In an all-out attack on the RSS and the BJP-led governments in the state and at the Centre, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (December 28) said Assam will not be run by Nagpur, the headquarters of the RSS, but by the Assamese people.

Speaking at a rally in Guwahati, he said the BJP and the RSS won’t be allowed to attack the history, language and culture of Assam. “Assam can never progress with hatred and violence. Everyone has to come together and tell the BJP leaders that they can’t attack the culture, language, identity and history of the state,” Gandhi said.

“Assam won’t be run by Nagpur. Assam won’t be run by RSS chaddiwale. Assam will be run by the Assamese people,” he said, referring to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

Gandhi said the spirit of Assam Accord which brought peace to the state, should not be ruined. “I fear Assam is returning to the path of violence because of the BJP’s policies,” he said, referring to the amended Citizenship Act.

“Wherever the BJP goes, it spreads hate. In Assam, youth is protesting. In other states too protests are happening. Why do you have to shoot and kill them? BJP doesn’t want to listen to voice of people,” he added.

Gandhi’s comments come in the backdrop of widespread protests across the country over the contentious new law.
