'Assassins out to kill you,' says letter to Odisha CM; police on alert

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik got an anonymous letter, claiming that unknown gunmen are on the loose looking for the chief minister with an intention to kill him. The state police is on a high alert although the state Director General of Police (DGP) refused to confirm the news.

Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik got an anonymous letter, claiming that unknown gunmen are on the loose looking for the chief minister with an intention to kill him. The state police is on a high alert although the state Director General of Police (DGP) refused to confirm the news.

The handwritten letter was received at Patnaik’s official residence, ‘Naveen Niwas’, in Bhubaneswar. The letter said that contract killers armed with latest weapons like AK-47 and semi-automatic pistol are already in Odisha to kill the CM. The letter writer also mentioned registration numbers of 17 cars that belong to the contract killers.

“I would like to inform you that some contact killers are (illegible) to kill you. These contact killers are professional criminals. These contact killers are equipped with latest weapons like AK-47, semi-automatic pistol. These criminals may attack you anytime… I would like to tell you that you can be killed anytime, so please be aware…” the anonymous letter reportedly said, according to PTI.

The handwritten note claimed the “the mastermind lives in Nagpur”.

The state home department has taken a serious note of the letter and alerted the Odisha DGP to avert possible attack on Patnaik.

The chief minister’s security at home, office and during travels is under review.

Odisha DGP Abhay did not confirm the report, but police sources said that a special team is working on the details.
