World Cup: Rohit ton, Bumrah spell help India beat B'desh by 28 runs

India beat Bangladesh by 28 runs at Edgbaston on Tuesday and secured a berth in the semi finals. However, the journey ends for Bangladesh.

India had won the toss and chose to bat first on a pitch favourable for a big score.

Rohit Sharma’s 92-ball 104 — studded with seven boundaries and five sixes — was his fourth century this World Cup. He has equalled the feat of Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara and became the only Indian cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to score 500+ runs in any World Cup.

Batting first, Rohit and KL Rahul set a solid partnership of 180 runs off 29 overs before Bangladesh got their first breakthrough as Soumya Sarkar picked Rohit’s crucial wicket.

Star performer for Bangladesh, which have won three of seven matches, was Mustafizur Rahman who picked five wickets conceding 59 runs off 10 overs, providing crucial breaks to restrict India from putting up a bigger total.

India had set a target of 315 runs for Bangladesh, a decent but chaseable total for the neighbours.

Shakib al Hassan’s 74-ball 66 and Mohammad Shaifuddin’s 38-ball 51 helped Bangladesh put up a close fight but quick wickets made it impossible for them to make it to 315. Jasprit Bumrah picked four wickets while Hardik Pandya dismissed three batsmen. One each were picked by Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Rohit Sharma was declared the Player of the Match. Now, India stand second with 13 points with six wins in eight matches.
