25 years of Michael Schumacher's Formula One world title legacy

Formula One legend Michael Schumacher, who was struck down by a skiing accident that snapped his helmet in December 2013, recorded his first-ever world drivers’ championship title on November 13 twenty-five years ago.

The Mercedes driver became the first German driver to win a world championship following which he clinched six more world titles, five of which he registered consecutively from 2000 to 2004.

However, his record of most world championship titles is now threatened by Lewis Hamilton who already has six such titles in his kitty.

According to the official website of Formula One, Schumacher is considered as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport and holds the records of for the most World Championship titles (7), maximum Grand Prix wins (91), the highest number of fastest laps (77) and the most races won in a single season (13).

On 29 December 2013, the German met with a skiing accident in which he suffered a traumatic brain injury and was placed in a medically induced coma for six months after which he was shifted back to his home.

In September 2014, Schumacher started receiving private rehabilitation and little to no information on his condition has been made public since then.

As of September this year, it was reported by Le Parisien, a French daily, that the 50-year-old was in Paris Georges-Pompidou hospital for cell therapy surgery. However, when contacted by AFP, the hospital authorities refused to confirm or deny the news citing medical privacy laws.

Since his first Grand Prix win back in 1992, his glory years were spent at Benetton and Ferrari, for whom he won the last of his 91 Grand Prix victories in China in 2006.
