With 42.04L cases, India becomes second-most COVID-affected nation

Just a week after the government initiated Unlock 4, opening metro rail, ending weekend curfews, and lifting curbs on interstate transport, India on Monday (September 7) surpassed Brazil’s COVID-19 tally to become the second-most affected nation in the world.

Just a week after the government initiated Unlock 4, opening metro rail, ending weekend curfews, and lifting curbs on interstate transport, India on Monday (September 7) surpassed Brazil’s COVID-19 tally to become the second-most affected nation in the world.

The country on Monday recorded a single-day spike in 90,802 infections, taking its tally to 42,04,613.

Almost 32,50,429 people have recuperated so far, pushing the national recovery rate to 77.30 per cent on Monday, according to the Union health ministry data. The death toll climbed to 71,642 with 1,016 fatalities being reported in a span of 24 hours.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate has further declined to 1.70 per cent. There are 8,82,542 active cases of the infection in the country which comprises 20.99 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

According to the ICMR, a cumulative total of 4,95,51,507 samples have been tested up to September 6 with 7,20,362 samples being tested on Sunday.

According to WHO, India has been reporting the highest number of daily COVID-19 cases in the world for nearly a month.

The country’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23 and it went past 40 lakh on September 5.

The states with the maximum number of cases are Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.

India’s rise to the second slot on the list of most affected nations coincides with the resumption of metro services in select cities. India is second to US which has logged in over 62.75 lakh COVID-19 cases so far.
