Mumbai police summon Kangana, sister for 'promoting enmity'

The fight between Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut and the Maharashtra government seems far from over. On Tuesday, the Mumbai police issued a notice to her and her sister Rangoli Chandel to appear before them on November 10 and November 11 in connection with a case that accuses them of promoting enmity between communities through their remarks.

The Bandra police had issued a similar notice to the sisters on October 21, but Kangana’s lawyer had then responded saying she was in Himachal Pradesh and busy with the wedding preparations of her cousin.

Earlier, Bollywood casting director and fitness trainer Munawwar Ali Sayyed had filed a complaint against the sisters with the Bandra police, referring to tweets and other statements issued by the two.

The police then filed a case against the duo under IPC sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, etc), 295-A (deliberate acts hurting religious sentiments) and 124-A (sedition), 34 (common intention).

Kangana came to limelight after with her run in with Maharashtra’s ruling Shiv Sena, especially after she commented on the Sushant Singh Rajput death case in June and then targeted Mumbai police for alleged lawlessness in Mumbai.

The argument turned ugly when she compared the country’s financial capital with Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir and claimed that she was “scared” to live in Mumbai. Maharashtra home minister NCP’s Anil Deshmukh and Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Raut then suggested that she leave Mumbai.

The fight went to the High Court when the Mumbai civic body demolished Kangana’s office in the Pali Hills area, citing 14 violations.
