Lifting the veil of mystery over his Monday’s cryptic tweet on quitting social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (March 3) announced that his accounts will instead be handled by women achievers on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8.

Modi on Monday sparked speculations tweeted that he is thinking of giving up his social media accounts on Sunday.

Lifting the veil of mystery over his Monday’s cryptic tweet on quitting social media, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (March 3) announced that his accounts will instead be handled by women achievers on the occasion of International Women’s Day on March 8.

“This Women’s Day, I will give away my social media accounts to women whose life & work inspire us. This will help them ignite motivation in millions,” he tweeted.

Calling women achievers to seize the opportunity, he urged them or anyone who knew such inspiring women, to share their stories using the hashtag #SheInspiresUs.

“Are you such a woman or do you know such inspiring women? Share such stories using #SheInspiresUs,” he tweeted.


The prime minister also tweeted a poster which invited women to share their inspiring stories on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram or videos on YouTube using the #SheInspiresUs. Select entries will get an opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas with the world through Modi’s social media accounts, it said.

Modi on Monday (March 2) tweeted that he is thinking of giving up his social media accounts on Sunday.


The tweet immediately invited a spate of conjectures from the political spectrum, with many even predicting a social media ban.

In about an hour, the tweet had been retweeted over 26,000 times.
