‘Shame, shame’ cry lawyers as Delhi HC refuses relief for Jamia students

The Delhi High Court on Thursday (December 19) issued notice to Centre, Delhi government and Delhi police on a PIL seeking setting up of a fact-finding committee to look into violence at Jamia Millia Islamia University here during protests against the Citizen (Amendment) Act.

A bench of Chief Justice D N Patel however declined interim protection to students from coercive action including arrest. Lawyers shouted “shame, shame” after the high court declined student’s interim protection.

The court’s decision came while hearing six petitions seeking medical treatment and compensation for injured students in the protests against CAA over the past few days.

The six petitions, moved by lawyers, students of Jamia University, residents of Okhla where the university is located, and the Imam of Jama Masjid mosque opposite Parliament House, had sought medical treatment, compensation and interim protection from arrest for the students.

They had also sought appropriate action, including registration of FIRs, against the erring police officers.

Several public buses and two police vehicles were torched in the clash between students and police at New Friends Colony near Jamia University during a demonstration against the CAA last Sunday. Students and police personnel were injured in the incident.
