SC extends Mohammed Zubair’s bail till further orders; next hearing on Sept 7

On Monday, a Lakimpur Kheri court in Uttar Pradesh remanded Zubair to 14 days of judicial custody in a case where he has been charged with promoting enmity between groups.

The Supreme Court has extended the interim bail granted to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair until further orders, in a case filed against him for calling Hindu seers “hate mongers” in a tweet.

Zubair had moved the court challenging the Allahabad High Court’s order of refusing to scrap an FIR filed against him by Uttar Pradesh police in the case.

The Supreme Court has listed Zubair’s plea for a hearing on September 7.

The apex court also gave four weeks’ time to the Uttar Pradesh government to file a response to Zubair’s plea.

Ahead of the Supreme Court hearing on Tuesday, the Sessions Court of Patiala House Court in Delhi deferred the hearing of Zubair’s bail plea in a case where he has been charged with promoting enmity between groups, for July 14.

On Monday, a Lakimpur Kheri court in Uttar Pradesh remanded Zubair to 14 days of judicial custody while hearing the same case.

Zubair was sent court warrant in the case on July 8, the same day the Supreme Court granted him a five-day bail.

The co-founder of the fact-finding website is currently lodged in Uttar Pradesh’s Sitapur jail.
