After calling Nathuram Godse a “deshbhakt” (patriot), the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Bhopal candidate Pragya Singh Thakur on Thursday (May 16) night tendered an apology.

“It was my personal opinion. My intention was not to hurt anyone’s sentiments. If I’ve hurt anyone I do apologise,” she is seen saying in a video. “What Gandhi ji has done for the country cannot be forgotten,” she said adding that her statement had been twisted by the media.

Earlier, when asked to react to actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan’s remark on Godse, she said, “People calling him a terrorist should look within and will be given a befitting reply in this election.”

Haasan recently kicked up a furore with his remark on Godse when he said “independent India’s first extremist was a Hindu”. His party, Makkal Needhi Maiam, later said his comments were “taken out of context”.
