The Swaraj Abhiyan, the Saamaaniya Makkal Nala Katchi (people welfare party), the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam, the Dravidar Viduthalai Kazhagam, and the May 17 Iyakkam, organisations with no pronounced political affiliations, organised a protest meeting in Karur on Monday (December 23) against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The meeting was held in tandem with the massive protest the DMK and its allies oragnised in Chennai on the day against the Act.
The protesters gathered near the Head Post Office, Karur and shouted slogans condemning the CAA. The speakers urged the government to repeal the Act as it was ‘discriminatory’ and against the basic tenets of the Constitution.
On the same day, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) staged a demonstration at Shah Nagar Corner. Representatives and Ulamas from various Jamaats took part. The shops in the vicinity were closed for an hour.
Speaking to The Federal, Ribayithin Hasani, district secretary, VCK said the demonstration was staged to condemn the implementation of the CAA. He said the police had given them an ‘unofficial permission’ to conduct the demonstration.
