The incident happened in jail number 3 on Sunday afternoon, they said, adding that he got some minor injuries and was treated inside the prison premises.

Days before the hanging date, in a last ditch effort to escape the noose, Vinay Kumar Sharma, one of the four men sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya gangrape and murder case, filed a curative petition in the Supreme Court on Thursday (January 9).

A curative petition is the last legal remedy available to a convict. On Tuesday, a Delhi court issued death warrants against Mukesh (32), Pawan Gupta (25), Vinay Sharma (26) and Akshay Kumar Singh (31) and said they will be hanged on January 22 at 7 am in Tihar jail.

Earlier, the convicts’ lawyer AP Singh had said after the January 7 order that they will file curative petition in Supreme Court soon. “We will file curative petition in SC within a day or two. Five senior most judges of SC will hear it. There has been pressure of media, public and political pressure in this case since beginning. Unbiased probe could not take place in this case,” he had said.

The convicts will remain in solitary confinement, until they are hanged to death. But, they will be allowed a last meeting with a family member.
