The withdrawal of monsoon from Maharashtra has been delayed because of development of consecutive weather systems, which will result in heavy to very heavy rainfall, especially in western parts of Maharashtra, throughout the week.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert (thunderstorm accompanied by gusty winds with heavy rain across isolated areas) for Mumbai and its suburbs for Wednesday. An orange alert has been issued for Palghar, Thane, Mumbai, Raigad and Ratnagiri, with a forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall (64.5 to 204.5 mm in 24 hours) at isolated places on Thursday.

“In view of the formation of the deep depression over west central Bay of Bengal and its gradual west-northwestwards movement, rainfall activity over most parts of Maharashtra is expected to increase during the next five days,” said IMD said.

Some parts of the state witnessed thundershowers with lightning associated with heavy spells of rain in the last two to three days.

Since October 1, Mumbai has received 56.1 mm of rain. On an average, the city receives 89.3 mm of rainfall in October.

According to IMD estimates, southwest monsoon should have withdrawn from the state by now. However, it has been delayed due to development of consecutive weather systems.

Rainfall has been satisfactory in Maharashtra this year with no significant damage to crop due to heavy or less rains reported anywhere so far.
