Mid-march downpour and hailstorm takes Delhiites by surprise

Delhiites were in for a surprise on Saturday (March 14) afternoon as many parts of the city witnessed heavy rains along with hail and thunderstorm. This led to the capital city appearing snow-clad. The downpour also led to traffic jams in several parts due to water-logging. The Delhi traffic police took to twitter to alert public about the grid-lock.

It was a cloudy morning with the minimum temperature hovering a bit over the season’s average of 16.4 degrees Celsius, the meteorological department said.

The heavy downpour in the middle of March, when localites were expected scorching summers came as a surprise and had netizens go gaga on social media. Twitter, Instagram and Facebook were flooded with videos and pictures of the hailstorm posted by Delhiites.

The rain also led to a dip in temperature. And water-logging made things difficult for riders of two-wheelers to navigate the flood and reach their destinations.

According to the Met office, the sky will remain cloudy and more showers are likely in the evening. “The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 27 degrees Celsius,” a weather department official said.
