The importance of a politically correct outfit is well known to the world especially when it comes to foreign visits by dignitaries. The bigwigs are often scrutinised closely and optics behind their clothing is discussed at length.

On their maiden visit to India on Monday (February 24) when United States President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump descended from Air Force One, all eyes were on them.

Especially, Melania, also a former model.

Known to have an elegant sense of style, the 49-year-old usually prefers styling herself without the help of stylists, according to reports. The Slovenian-origin celebrity has also been featured in a number of fashion magazines such as Vogue, Harper Bazaar and GQ during her modelling days.

Having a history in fashion, the fashionista is being closely watched for her choice of wardrobe during her two-day visit to India.

And it is safe to say, she didn’t disappoint us.

On day one, FLOTUS (First Lady of the United States) looked like a vision in a white crème crepe jumpsuit with an 18th century green and gold brocade sash around her waist. The outfit was designed by Nicolas Caito and Hervé Pierre, of the New York-based fashion house Atelier Caito for Hervé Pierre.

In his Instagram account, Herve Pierre explained the Indian connect of the dress – the sash which he claimed was cut “in an early XX century Indian textile documents” that he found in Paris.

“The sash is made out of green silk and gold metallic thread. We used the border which was the most Interesting piece we could use as it was a vintage piece,” he said.

Going with white on day two again, the FLOTUS chose to wear a white shirt dress with an easy-breezy feel.

Featuring a collar and clinched with a belt, the shirt dress had a pop of colour with floral motifs of red, blue, yellow and green on it. She completed the look with white pumps.

The dress is by designer Carolina Herrera.

Herrera has been a favourite of almost all the first ladies of the US. She has also dressed Jacqueline Lee Kennedy Onassis, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama.

Ivanka chooses flowers, pastels

Just like Melania Trump, Ivanka Trump, daughter and senior advisor to Trump, too stuck to midi dresses and off-white clothes for her India tour.

On Monday, Ivanka looked garden-fresh in a baby blue midi dress with red floral prints by designer Proenza Schouler. The dress had a bow on the neckline and puffed sleeves. She paired it with red stilettos.

However, what worked for the 38-year-old was the fact that she repeated the dress.

Fashion enthusiasts were quick to point out that Ivanka had already worn the dress on her visit to Argentina last year and lauded her purpose of repeating the dress which was to show support for sustainable fashion.

Making a power statement on Tuesday, Ivanka sported an off white sherwani with trousers by Indian designer Anita Dongre.

The Indo-western fusion clothing is made out of handwoven Murshidabad silk.

Terming the outfit ‘timeless’ and ‘classic’, Dongre said, “We created this style twenty years ago and it’s amazing to see how beautifully relevant it is even today.”

“A powerful, standout silhouette, a sherwani carries the same charisma in absolutely any colour but my personal favourites are the evergreen blue, white and black,” she added.

Dongre has previously dressed dignitaries such as British royal Kate Middleton, Belgium’s Queen Mathilde, Canada’s first lady Sophie Greogoire Trudeau and former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton.
