Kanpur ambush: Cop accused of tipping off Vikas Dubey arrested

A week after eight policemen were shot dead at a village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur, inspector Vinay Tiwari, who had been charged with tipping off prime accused Vikas Dubey about the manhunt, was arrested on Wednesday (July 08), NDTV reported.

According to the report, Tiwari was the inspector of Chaubeypur police station, under whose limits the Bikru village fell. Tiwari has also been accused of watering down charges against Dubey in the pending cases of murder, kidnapping, extortion and rioting.

Dinesh Kumar, the superintendent of police, Kanpur, said the department had made the arrests after collecting a lot of evidence. “If anyone attacks the police or prevents us from working or conspires to get a policeman attacked, we will take action even if it is a fellow cop,” NDTV quoted Kumar as saying.

In the wee hours of Friday (July 03), a deputy superintendent of police three sub-inspectors and four constables were killed in an ambush in Bikru. After snatching weapons from the police personnel, the criminals had opened fire at the team from the rooftops.

Later, the department suspended four of its policemen on suspicion that they had tipped off Dubey. It also began a probe into a letter, reportedly written by Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Devendra Kumar Mishra, who was one among the deceased personnel.

Also, all 68 personnel at the Chaubeypur police station were shunted to the reserve police lines on Tuesday (July 7). A spokesperson said an inquiry was already on and action would be taken against the guilty based on its findings.
