Kangana gets legal notice from Sikh committee for farmers' protest tweet

Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut has been served a legal notice by the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) for her “derogatory” tweet against an elderly woman who took part in the ongoing farmers’ protest.

On her Twitter account, Kangana had tweeted about the woman and said she was “available for ₹100”. The tweet was deleted by the actress after several users slammed her.

Her tweet read, “Ha ha ha she is the same dadi who featured in Time magazine for being the most powerful Indian….And she is available in 100 rupees. Pakistani jurno’s have hijacked international PR for India in an embarrassing way. We need our own people to speak for us internationally (sic).”

The elderly woman was later identified as Mahinder Kaur. Kangana had misidentified her as Bilkis Bano of Shaheen Bagh protests.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, President, DSGMC, said they have served a legal notice to Kangana and demanded “unconditional apology”.

“We have sent a legal notice to @KanganaTeam for her derogatory tweet calling the aged mother of a farmer as a woman available for ₹100. Her tweets portray farmers protest as antinational We demand an unconditional apology from her for her insensitive remarks on farmers protest (sic),” Sirsa wrote on her Twitter handle on Friday (December 4).

Along with the tweet, she shared the copy of the four-page notice.

“That by the tenor of your derogatory and defamatory statement, you, the Noticee have not only attempted to portray and indicate that the Dadi/old woman is available for a paltry sum of Rupees 100/- per day, but also had the audacity to laugh and mock at the farmer’s agitation and labelled the same as motivated and/or sponsored campaign,” the notice said.

Further it stated, “That our client states that you, the Noticee, by the said fake tweets/retweets has attempted to misuse the huge social media following for oblique motive and vested interest for political mileage by defaming the farmers peaceful protest and agitation.

“That such act of you, the Noticee is meant to creat a divide in the society and our client states that the said act of you, the Noticee, is a clear example of a ‘Hate Tweet’ that needs to be addressed and explained before the fake, derogatory and imaginary tweet/retweet on social media further causes prejudice to the rights of the farmers in their peaceful agitation and protest as ordained under the constitutional rights.”

Earlier, advocate Harkam Singh too had sent a legal notice to Kangana over her tweet. “It is to inform you that the said lady is not a fake lady. Her name is Mahinder Kaur and she belongs to Bathinda. She is the wife of farmer Labh Singh Nambardar. She in her life, has always remained connected with fields and filed work and she is the wife of a farmer,” the notice said.
