Parliament passes Jammu and Kashmir re-organisation bill

The Jammu and Kashmir re-organisation bill, which was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Monday (August 5) got cleared by the Lok Sabha on Tuesday (August 6) through a division of votes. Out of the 440 votes that were registered, 370 votes were cast in favour of the bill and 70 votes were cast against it.

Now that the bill has been ratified by both Houses of Parliament, it would become a law once the President gives his assent. Both the Houses also ratified the J&K Reservation Bill.

Preceding the voting, there were sharp and acrimonious exchanges between the treasury ad the opposition benches over scrapping Article 370. Earlier, Union home minister Amit Shah introduced the bill and gave his reply to the debate,just as he did in the Rajya Sabha. He specifically referred to some of the points raised by members of the opposition during the course of his reply.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi walked in ahead of the reply given by Amit Shah. He was given a standing ovation by members of the NDA who also chanted “Bharat Mata ki Jai” and “Vande Matram.”
