SC rejects CBI's review plea against bail given to Chidamabaram in INX case
A review petition filed by Central Bureau of Investigation against granting bail to former finance minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media corruption case was dismissed by the Supreme Court on Thursday (June 4)
The apex court had on October 22 last year granted bail to Chidambaram in the case dismissing CBI’s claim that he was a “flight risk”. The court also said there was no possibility of him absconding from the trial.
A bench headed by Justice R Banumathi rejected the review plea filed by the CBI saying the last year verdict does not suffer from any error warranting its reconsideration.
“Application for oral hearing the review petition in open court is rejected. We have perused the review petition and the connected papers carefully and are convinced that the order, of which review has been sought, does not suffer from any error apparent warranting its reconsideration. The review petition is, accordingly, dismissed,” the bench said in its order dated June 2.
The order was uploaded on the Supreme Court website on June 4.
Chidambaram was arrested dramatically by the CBI on August 21,2019 in the INX media corruption case. It was a dramatic chase and arrest where the officials had to scale the walls of Chidambaram’s house in full view of television cameras.
The officials alleged irregularities in a Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance granted to the INX Media group for receiving overseas funds of ₹305 crore in 2007, during his tenure as finance minister.
Chidambaram has denied all the allegations levelled against him in the case. He was granted bail in December after spending three months in Tihar jail.
