IIT-Madras tops government rankings of higher education institutes

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras has topped the list of higher education institutes in the country, according to the HRD Ministry's National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released on Thursday (June 11). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and IIT-Delhi bagged the second and third places respectively.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT)-Madras has topped the list of higher education institutes in the country, according to the HRD Ministry’s National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) released on Thursday (June 11). The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the IIT-Delhi bagged the second and third places respectively.

As per the ranking, the top three engineering colleges in the country are IIT-Madras, IIT-Delhi and IIT-Bombay. Whereas, the top three universities are IISc Bangalore, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Banaras Hindu University. Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) has topped the list of management institutes in the country.

In the category of medical colleges, AIIMS Delhi bagged the top spot followed by PGI, Chandigarh and CMC, Vellore. The annual rankings are usually announced in April, but this year they had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank released the annual rankings over a live broadcast on social media. He said all 1,000-plus universities, as well as 45,000-plus colleges across the country, must be encouraged to take part in the rankings.

The NIRF rankings come a few days after the QS World University Rankings revealed that India’s best universities, including IISc and most IITs, had slipped in the global lists. According to the QS rankings, IIT-Bombay was ranked as the top university in India.
