An encounter broke out between militants and security forces in Sopore area of Jammu and Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday (July 12), police said.

Security personnel launched a cordon and search operation around midnight in the Reban area of Sopore town following information on presence of militants, a police official said.
He said the search operation turned into an encounter around 4.00 am on Sunday when the hiding militants opened firing on the security forces, who retaliated. No casualties have been reported so far.

On Saturday (July 11), Two militants suspected to a part of terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba were shot dead along the Line of Control in Naugam sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The encounter happened after the army troops noticed suspicious movement and foiled an infiltration attempt by the militants.

J&K police suspect increased infiltration attempts by Pakistan to stir violence in the valley as the one year anniversary of abrogation of Article 370 nears.

Earlier on July 8, a new militant outfit called The Resistance Front shot dead Sheikh Wasim Bari, a former district president of BJP along with his father and his brother. Incidentally the attack was executed on the death anniversary of a Hizbul Mujahideen militant commander, Burhan Wani.
